Előző nap folyamatosan bőgött a ködkürt, ringatózott a hajó, ahogy a sarkvidéki nyári ködben Arhangelszkből Murmanszkba tartottunk.
The day before the ship's whistle was roaring all day, the ship was rocking as we headed from Arkhangelsk to Murmansk in the Arctic summer fog. But here the sun shines. As soon as I could I left the ship and went with bike to the city. The female KGB officer inspected for a long time my passport on the ship and took a lot of phone call but at last just she let me out. Another check at the exit but it was already fast. Spasiba - I say politely and I look to the right where the Lenin nuclear icebreaker is docking.
Lenin élt/ Lenin lived
Előbb azonban a város.
But first the city. Murmansk is depressing as Arkhangelsk, no one speaks any language other than Russian concrete block houses everywhere, socialist sculptures. I try to explain in the post office for a long time I want a postcard, and then I learn the word: “Atkritka”. Atkritka they don’t have they say, and send me to the main post office, there they have already some. The main post office is (of course) on Lenin Avenue, right next to Komsomolskaya ulitsa and Karl-Marx ulitsa.
Velük élő múlt 1./The living past 1.
The city played a heroic role in World War II (which Soviet city not?) the Allies were able to transport the aid here. It is close to Finnland and at that time the German army was only by few kilometers away but thanks to the heroic defenders of the peninsula, they were unable to take the city for two years.
Velük élő múlt 2./The living past 2
Prostitutes benefited this proximity then in the 1990s as they went to Finland because of the much more rich customers. The Finnish authorities later abolished this by limiting the visa. I was hoping to find a chiropractor if capitalism was outbroken but nowhere in the city I found but I asked in several places. Only two or three foreign ships visit Murmansk every year.

I bounce back to the harbour. It’s not easy because I have to break through multiple railroad tracks. The trains come and go at their own chilled pace. Many drivers seems to lose their patience so the crossing is protected in a special way.
In addition the intermittent jingle from the funnel speaker - pure time travel. One of the trains is waiting long time in the crossing, it is impossible to detour, the line is gathering. I’m glad I got back in time if I had to hurry I’d probably be nervous.
I'll be right back at noon I still have an hour. A tour to the icebreaker is just starting. With our naive Italian navigator we are just the two foreigners, everyone else is Russian. Alessandro is naive because he thought he could pay in dollars for the ticket. Well, of course not. Luckily I have enough rubles I invite him to the 300-ruble (appx 4 USD) ticket. The tour guide only speaks Russian, I’m trying to peel something out of what she wants to say. Later with the help of one of the visitor, she summarizes in a few words in English.
Két hajó/Two ships
Lenin nuclear icebreaker was a huge achievement of it’s era. The ship, built between 1957-59 was equipped with an OK-150 pressurized water reactor. It consumed approx. ten kilograms of uranium-235 a year.
Reaktortér/Reactor area
A fenti képen is látható, hogy méretben szinte megegyezik a Silver Clouddal: 16.000 tonnás, 134 méter hosszú, 27,6 méter széles és 16,1 méter magas. Legnagyobb sebessége 18 tengeri mérföld (33 km/h), de jégtörő üzemmódban általában 2-10 mérföld/órával haladt.
The image above also shows that it is almost the same size as the Silver Cloud: 16,000 tons, 134 meters long, 27.6 meters wide and 16.1 meters high. Its top speed is 18 nautical miles (33 km/h), but in icebreaking mode it usually traveled 2-10 miles/h.
Contrary to the idea of the land-locked people it did not break the ice with it’s nose but swam up to a max. two meters thick ice and shattered it with its weight. Terrible energies could have been consumed by this constant up and down progress.
If we take a look at the map we can see how much the Soviet Union needed icebreakers: at its two other sea exits - the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea narrow passages – was dominated by the beasts of imperialism and the White Sea froze in winter. With Lenin's service shipping routes were shortened and the Soviet navy was finally able to be deployed all year round. Last but not least, the terribly famous submarines were produced in nearby Arkhangelsk, which also benefited from free water.
The other goal was to explore and unleash the Arctic, especially research into Arctic oil fields. Such distances through the ice could only be covered by a nuclear-powered ship.
Harminc év szolgálat/ 30 years of service
The nuclear power plant works exactly like a housewife's cooker: the energy generated during nuclear fission is absorbed and thus producing heat. This boils water (with a single or double circuit system) and then releases the steam to a turbine. The steam rotates the turbine, and the generator starts to work.

1967-ben a hűtőberendezés meghibásodott, kisebb nukleáris balesethez vezetett. A Lenin atomjégtörőn összesen két kisebb ilyen jellegű affér történt.

Alessandro wanted to enter the cabin, but it was locked, they said the captain was just sleeping. Do they say the retired officer lives on the ship?
Our navigator felt great he wasn't so lively in the engine room but he felt already at home on the bridge in his netural environment. He looked into the ancient radar equipment though as he noted the black rubber mask with which complete darkness could be done was missing.

Sajnos az oroszoknak múzeumban még fejlődniük kell. Ha összevetjük a Lenint az USS Midwayjel
Unfortunately, the Russians have to improve how to set a museum. If we compare Lenin to the USS Midway

Mikor beérkezem, a reggel óta ott szobrozó KGB-s bárisnyának a kezébe nyomom a piros bumázskát „ocseny szpasziba málágyec” kifejezéssel, ezen jót nevet. Paula a személyzetis, elvesztve angol hidegvérét sziszegve számon kéri az öt percet, nem értem mit dühösködik, közli hogy a kapitányhelyettes (egyben biztonsági tiszt) elé citáltat. Ugyanezt megkapja Alessandro is, értetlenül pillogunk.
“All crew on board time” 13.00. We get back to 13.05, I'm not worried, I see the ship is bunkering (being refueled) we won't be leaving any time soon. When I arrive, I put the red bumashka to the hand of the KGB barishna (who has been sculpting there since this morning) with the phrase “ocheny spasiba maladets”, she laughs. Paula, the crew manager leaving of her English cold blood hissing asks for the five minutes late. I don't understand what she's angry about, she announces that she will citate us to the staff captain (also a security officer). Alessandro gets the same, we blink incomprehensibly, then pops in that she probably has to hand over all his passports to the Chekists, so she was nervous not wanting to bother with state security. (Nothing happened anyway.)

Könnyű felismerni a síugrósánc orráról.
