A hegy annál nagyobbnak látszik, minél közelebb érünk hozzá.
A miniszter annál kisebbnek
What is the difference between a mountain and a politician?
The mountain seems bigger the closer we get to it.
The politician seems smaller
I have been in Cartagena in Spain several times (not to be confused with Cartagena in Colombia, you can read about it here: https://vizizene.blog.hu/2014/04/17/2012_december_18_cartagena ).
Cartagena is not a very interesting city, ancient theater ruins, town hall, the whole thing is actually a military port. I spotted a small hill in one place to get a bird's eye view.

After breakfast I jump on my bike and ride through the city center using the usual winding Spanish bike paths. The locals are still waking up: no wonder. It is the same time zone as Budapest, Berlin or Valletta, but it is much further west, the sun rises later. They have coffee and snacks in small restaurants. And the dog looks at them.
kutya nézi a gazdit/ dog watches the owner
Balra fordulok. A haditengerészeti akadémiát megkerülve
I turn left. A group of cyclists in sportswear appears. They ride so fast that not only do I not have time to take the camera out of the bag, but also the phone out of my pocket. I thought of following them but by the time I had gone the thirty meters where they had passed there was no sign of them.

the road continues in a dry riverbed. Where the google map indicates I run into a barrier, I choose the other branch of the road that forks, theoretically it also leads there only longer. I ride 500 meters then i am enlighted that I did the EXACT same thing last time and this road leads nowhere! But then where do people run and bike here?
I stop an oncoming cyclist, of course he doesn't speak English. We communicate in the usual way, I mumble a few Italian words and he answers in Spanish with long sentences. He tells me that I was in the right place earlier. I must continue at the barrier. He also guides me there, I look at him doubtfully, it is written in big letters that "military area, no entry, extremely dangerous for cyclists"
Különösen veszélyes/extremely dangerous
Kérdezem, biztos jó lesz ez. Persze, persze, ott a kis ösvény, ami megkerüli a sorompót. Dehogyis. Ebben a pillanatban egy csinos nő megkerüli a sorompót és tempósan elindul felfelé, akkor hát rajta! Muchas gracias, köszönök el és nekiindulok. Meredeken megy az út,,
I'm asking is he sure this will be good. Sure, sure, there's the little path that goes around the barrier. They won't... I don't know the word, I show to "shoot", he laughs. No way. At this moment, a pretty woman bypasses the barrier and starts walking uphill at a brisk pace, so let's go on! Muchas gracias I say goodbye and get started. The road is steep,
Egyre meredekebbnek tűnik/seems more and more steeper
csak lassan érem be a tempósan haladó hölgyet, később, mikor megállok fényképezni újra és újra beér.
I only slowly catch up with the speeding lady, later, when I stop to take pictures, she catches me up again and again.
At a fork another sign, entry is strictly prohibited. A cyclist is coming down from that direction, after that I ignore it with Mediterranean indifference.
Belépni tilos/no entry
The road is dangerous because it is steep, serpentine full of sharp turns and there are no barriers.

By the time I get up I'm already sweating profusely. Unfortunately the castle cannot be visited, it is fenced by the army
Sajnos nincs tovább/no further way
A kilátás innen ugyanolyan szép.
The view from here is just as beautiful.

Easy slide down. I'm putting a picture here so you can see how the serpentine snakes.

Tíz perc alatt visszaérek a városba. Megveszem a szokásos narancslé-fuet kombinációt, egy parkban elfogyasztom. A főutcán óriási tömeg, inkább kerülök jobbra-balra, találomra fordulok be az utcákba. Érdekesek az utcanévtáblák. A szokásos falra csavarozott szabvány táblák mellett művészi réztáblák is jelzik az utcák nevét.
I'll be back in town in ten minutes. I buy the usual orange juice-fuet (Spanish sausage)combination and eat it in a park. There is a huge crowd on the main street, I prefer to go left and right, I turn into the streets at random. The street name signs are interesting. In addition to standard signs screwed to the wall, artistic copper signs also indicate the names of the streets.

Two weeks later we dock here again, this time I turn right. I look at the hill on the other side of the bay so I can take a look at the area from both sides. The beginning of the road is boring, before I get out of the city center I stumble upon an airplane.
Casa C101
A Casa C101 Aviojet csatarepülőt a hetvenes években fejlesztették a spanyolok, a Messerschmidt AG és a Northrop segítségével.
The Casa C101 Aviojet fighter was developed in the 1970s by the Spaniards with the co-operation of Messerschmidt AG and Northrop.
Pár percig főúton tekerek, szokásos koszos út lehangoló környezetben, egyedül egy-két graffitti dobja fel a tájat.
I ride along the main road for a few minutes, a usual dirt road in a depressing environment, only one or two graffiti brighten up the landscape.
Graffitti
However it is not dangerous at all, the drivers are careful, passyng by with a correct distance. They also have a warning sign!
I cross the highway on an overpass, the GPS smartly guides me to an unpaved road then I turn left after passing a hospital. I ride through a suburban district inhabited by visibly poorer people. Then the road starts to climb. I shift further and further back on the gear, going at a comfortable pace in the starting heat when suddenly another cyclist appears next to me. By the time I get the phone out of my pocket, I can only see the his back.
Egy pillanat alatt lehagyott/he left me in a second
Feljebb kis viadukt vezet át az árok felett,
The road leads to a small viaduct up over the moat,
kis viadukt
I still see him there but then he disappears from my sight. It's a pity because I come to a fork, I suspect I should go right. There's a biker coming down from there, but the phone tells me to go left. A group of bikers is also coming from there, okay then we'll go there. The church is right between the two roads.

I look back, the viaduct and the cemetery are already well below me.
Város és temető/city and cemetery
Mindegy, elindulok felfelé, tolom a gépet.
After two hundred meters the phone beeps in my ear which means I'm going the wrong way. I check it, I really forgot to turn onto a concrete road. But it's very steep, surely this is the way to go?! Anyway I'm going up, pushing the bike. A man approaches me on foot, I ask if this road leads to the church. Say yes, but mostly rocky, "duro", two kilometers. After a few dozen meters, the concrete runs out and the road becomes a path. Then the solid pavement comes back again and again, but it's not very good either, it's impossible to ride a bike.
Lehetetlenség kerékpározni/impossible to cycle
A biciklit hol tolom, hol a vállamra veszem, a hőség kezd beütni. Sokszor megpihenek.
Whether I push the bike or take it on my shoulder, the heat starts to hit me. I often rest. It's interesting, just when I get tired and there's a little shadow there's a cross with a picture!
Eldugott kereszt/hidden cross
At first I guess Calvary, but looking closer at the pictures, they don't depict that story.
Nem golgota/not Calvary

I only have to go a few hundred meters and I reach the last steps. The path was only about eight hundred meters - although very steep.
Utolsó lépcsőfokok/last steps
A kis út a templom előkertjébe vezet.

Just lots of cats, they own the world like everywhere in the Mediterranean.

I look back where I came from, it is impossible to go back here. One can still carry the bike uphill, but it's impossible downhill on the rocky ground.
Itt lehetetlen visszamenni./impossible downhill
A templom zárva, bár valahonnan hangok szűrődnek ki, beszélgetés, edénycsörömpölés. Körbejárok, a látvány vegyes. Egyik oldalon Cartagena és az öböl
The church is closed, although sounds filter out from somewhere, conversation, clinking of dishes. I walk around, the view is mixed. On one side, Cartagena and the bay

and on the third is an oil refinery complex, its stench can be felt here.
I look around for a few more minutes, then I reach the city in ten minutes on the road used by cars. This was the one I suspected I should have taken but the GPS had diverted me. Anyway it was more beautiful this way, even if it was harder.
